Roofing Materials Guide: Shingle Weight, Granules & What Actually Lasts
Two roofs can look identical from the street and perform completely differently over 20 years. The difference is in the materials — and most of it is invisible once the job is done. Here’s what actually matters, so you can tell a quality roof from a cosmetic one.
Shingle weight is a real signal
Heavier shingles have more asphalt and better granule coverage, and they hold up longer. As a rough guide:
- 240–260 lbs per square — entry-level architectural shingles
- 270–300 lbs — mid-grade
- 320+ lbs — premium
Weight isn’t everything, but a heavier shingle from a reputable manufacturer generally resists wind, hail, and UV better than a lighter one.
Granules do the hard work
Those tiny mineral granules on top of a shingle aren’t just for color — they’re the shingle’s sunscreen. They protect the asphalt underneath from UV radiation, which is the number-one cause of shingle aging. When you see granules collecting in your gutters, that’s the roof losing its protection and accelerating toward failure.
The layers you never see
A roof is a system, not just shingles. The parts under the surface are where longevity is won or lost:
- Underlayment, fastened with button-cap nails — never staples. Staples tear through and don’t hold in wind.
- Self-adhering ice-and-water barrier in all valleys, low-slope sections, and shaded areas where water lingers.
- Starter strip at both the eaves and the rake edges — not just the eaves — to lock down the perimeter against wind uplift.
- F8 drip edge where the build warrants it, for better edge coverage than the common F5.
- Shingles nailed in the designated nail zone — high-nailing is one of the most common installation errors and it voids wind protection.
North Carolina code is the floor, not the goal
NC does not have the strictest roofing code in the country. We install to best practice regardless of the minimum requirement, because the code is the least you’re allowed to do — not the standard your home deserves.
